The Spirit Within Us

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (NIV).
— II Corinthians 3:17

I recently read a book by Francis Chan called Forgotten God. As I re-read some of the portions I was struck by a beginning couple paragraphs. I often think about the fact that the Holy Spirit of God lives inside me yet I wonder if I truly am tapping into His presence in my life. Here is what Chan says,

Have you ever through about the significance of having ‘another’ Counselor who is ‘just like’ Christ? Right now, imagine what it would be like to have Christ standing beside you in the flesh, functioning as your personal Counselor. Imagine the peace that would come from knowing you would always receive perfect truth and flawless direction from Him. That sounds amazing, and none of us could deny the benefit of having Jesus here physically, guiding and enabling us every step of the way.

One suggestion that Chan makes in connecting more with the Spirit of God within us is to put ourselves in a place which is uncomfortable, to step outside our comfort zones and then trust God to guide us as we walk with Him. There are many verses which instruct us about God who is personal and loves to walk with us each step of the way. One of my favorites is Hebrews 10:23 which says, "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful."

What is it that the Holy Spirit of God us guiding you toward as a step of faith? Perhaps you are already in that place now. In that case take steps to hold onto Him unswervingly and put your hope in Him. As you do this, take not of the way the Holy Spirit guides you. Be aware of His presence in your life. As you practice the presence of God, you will begin to notice Him more and more. My prayers go with you brothers and sisters as you seek to learn and understand how God's Spirit guides and comforts you. And if you haven't trusted your life to Christ, please reach out and let's talk. God desires to comfort and lead you too!
