I asked several people in our community to write a devotion on something God was teaching them and I am pleased to post our first team devotional here today. Sherry Schut works diligently with our email prayer ministry. We are very thankful for all she does! Below is her devotion:
This world that we are now living in is a world filled with so many different values, cultures, beliefs, opinions, hatred and religions. It makes it difficult to avoid feeling fearful and anxious.
How are we supposed to feel secure?
The answer is found through Gods Holy Word....the only truth is found in the Scriptures.
God does not want us living in fear and anxiety!
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
I read a book that had a statement about anxiety....it stated “The presence of anxiety is unavoidable, but the prison of anxiety is optional.”
Anxiety is an emotion that we feel and that emotion can cause us to sin. When we try to numb our fears with worldly things (alcohol, food, drugs, gossip etc), then it becomes toxic and leads us into sin and holds us prisoners. It makes us feel sad, our thoughts become negative, we assume bad things will happen, life doesn't feel worth living anymore.
Go back and re-read Philippians 4 above....believe what the Lord is telling you for He is ready to give you all of it. With God as our helper, we can know the truth, banish the enemy and calm our fears and anxiety.
The world may be filled with hatred and sin, but we have a Living Savior who loves us so much and gave us His Holy True Word so that we could find truth, love, peace and joy as we journey through this life on earth.
